I was looking to start playing bass and no one I know knows how to play. I am going to learn how to play by lessons. Anyways I have a few questions:
What kind should I get?
What is the average price I'm looking at?
How long will it take me to learn to play?
Is it possible to just listen to a song and learn how to play it if you have been playing for a long time?

Get a fender bass. I myself play guitar and only use gibsons, but as far as basses go there's no question at all, get fender.

With a fender bass you can be looking anywhere from 200$ for a kinda crapty bass, to a grand for a really nice fender jazz bass, which is what my best friend got, and he loves it. It's insanely nice.

You're also gonna need a bass amp to hear yourself play, so add at least 200 onto the price of the guitar depending on how good of an amp you want, and you'll have your basic price excluding cables, picks, straps and all that stuff.

How long it takes depends on how much of a natural you are at it, and whatyou consider being able to play. You should be able to play some simple and fun songs through without a problem in roughly 1-2 months. Getting really good can take a while though.

Once you're good, and you know how to pick out the bass from drums and guitar in a song, you can listen to a song and tab it out for yourself to play, it's hard to get it exact no matter how good you are though.

Price: $400 to $500 (check out musiciansfriend.com)
Learning to play: We all have different learning abilities, you may pick it up quickly or it may take some time.
You can learn to play by ear but you'll need to learn how to play the bass in the first place.

I hope this info helps and good luck.

1 get a fender p-bass. 2 about 300.00 3 how much time will you spend practicing? 4 yes, once you learn the theory of music and you get the skill part down (practice) you should have no trouble with this. good luck, and remember to practice.

Start with an inexpensive electric bass. Washburn, fender, etc. anything that works. $200 or less. Practice everyday and find a drummer and guitarist to accompany you. You'll be slapping those strings in no time.

Get a Mac. It'll make your experience so much more enjoyable.

My starter was First Act from Wal*Mart. It was cheap, I didn't want to spend too much, just in case I didn't like playing. I've upgraded to a Ibanez Soundgear with a Fender 100 Rumble... not that good, but good enough for me for just playing around and stuff.

probably only spend 200 to get a starter bass. length of time depends on practice and any talent you already have.

good luck.
