Yes, the world as we know it runs on the pursuit of money. Most people get up in the morning and head to work because they have to earn money to keep up the cultural standard they find themselves in. Western civilization is driven by industry, and oil is the blood that pumps through it's veins. People strive to improve their lot, which is based mostly on materialism, which we appraise in terms of money. Money is the tool that people in power use to obtain more power and jocky for position. Most people won't take a principled stand because of what they may lose: their status, or money.

Money is a tool to work one's way through a world founded on money. So it's very important to gain the right perspective so as to not fall into the quicksand. The pursuit of money for it's own sake - a sense of power and security - has been the downfall of many.

Today on the way in to work I was thinking of money. I think it's the one thing that let's you know the stuff that a person is made of, depending on how they really relate to money.

Most people do believe that money does make the world go round. Without money, many people believe that the world would stop functioning as sufficiently as it is now.

My personal opinion is that like you said, money can't buy love, respect or things that only a human being and not sheets of paper can give, but I believe that some people do believe money does make them feel happier and because they can "buy" people's love [buying gifts etc,] perhaps that makes them feel better within themselves.

Of course money isn't the most important thing in the world; it all depends on the person themselves what this is; the fact remains that as long as there is money in the world, people will use it to get what they want.

Whether you believe this is fair or not is up to you.

In the true sense of the question the answer is yes and no. Here's why I say that. You don't necessarily need money to trade now do you? If no, then you don't need money. We could trade goods and services and do without the money.

On the other hand (and this is my thought) if I'm gonna trade you corn for wheat, do I not need money to buy the seeds in order to grow the corn and wheat?

Now if we did deeper we can argue that there are people in the world smart enough to MAKE corn seeds and this being the case, then we really DON'T NEED MONEY AT ALL. We just create the corn seeds and trade them for something else.

All in all I think money is needed to help in making the world go round but it most certainly isn't the most important. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

This is my contribution.

Money is just a symbol for relative values. The same amount buys a new well for the community in one country, in another it buys a round of drinks for a few pals. We don't have to like it but money does make the world go around, and it helps us weigh up international and individual priorities.

Money doesn't make the world go round, it just oils the cogs. It's a tool that we have to have in our society but the one thing that is universally agreed to be the most powerful and motivating force is love ... love for people, love for country ... even love for money. If you love something enough, you will do anything to get it or keep it.

Money does not make the world spin or rotate or stay on its orbit around the sun, ... it also does not make people bahave as they should all of the time (there is lots of horrendous crime).

But it does create an incentive for working, for inventing, for selling, for owning stuff, and for working hard trying to improve your position in society and to attain a wider range of options.

Love and time. Both are free and are precious. You can have a lot of money but its time and love that makes the world tick. Would a child rather have £100 or someone take them to the beach and play in the sand and have a picnic.

Centrifugal force, not money, makes the world go round. We could survive without money, but try living without centrifugal force!
