The water in my shower won't drain. It is terribly cold where I live, so I suspect it has something to do with that. For now the water is just standing. Any solutions?

Is the shower over the garage or on an outside wall??? It's frozen.. There are all sorts of things to do but they getting at the trap and applying heat for an hour or more..If you can't get at the trap you could load the trap with salt ( half cup) and wait a couple days and it might break loose. If it's the first floor get in the cellar and take the hair dryer to it for about an hour...

is the bathroom near the outside of the house? the pipes that are near the outside could be frozen. If it is, there's nothing you can do except wait until the water melts to drain.

If it isn't, then your drain is plugged and either get a plunger or get some drano, but I think you'd see a slow drain rather than a no drain.

This same thing happened to my kitchen sink when it was extremely cold outside. The sink would not drain. I had to abstain from using it and wait till the next day. The next day I think it was warm enough to thaw and the drain worked. I suspect you have the same problem. I'm pretty sure the warmth from your house will eventually melt the frozen part in your drain. good luck.

This is the order of steps;
1. Remove any hair or 'gunk' from drain with bent hanger. Especially if you are a long haired person.
2. Plunger
3. Drano
4. Combination of Plunger & Water. Put a bit of water in the drain and plunge. Repeat.
5. Call a plumber

I hope this helps. :)

This just happened to me yesterday and it was from the tub drain being frozen. My husband had to crawl under our house with a hair dryer or little heater to thaw out the drain. Heat tape also works well but we had a mouse chew through the wire (which is why the drain froze). It could also just be a clogged drain. You could try some draino or something like that or have it snaked out.

Is it likely that just that one drain would freeze? Are the other drains in your house OK? I'm leaning toward the hair ball or some other obstruction.
