ULIP is unit linked insurance plan. Means , part of your money will be invested in shares like a mutual fund and the other part will be in Govt.Bonds
In ordinary mutual funds you do not have insurance. ULIP is better

Main differences between ULIP and ordinary mutual funds is variation in expenses — administrative charges, mortality charges and, of course, fund management fees.

ULIP is certainly less risky. But I use to like MF. Nowadays I go with muni bonds or something conservative.

pricey, MF is extra perfect than ULIP MF no the front end costs now yet you should pay fee for ULIP Then no coverage for MF yet ULIP have many coverages. examine in the previous make investments.
