Try anything by Stephen King or Dean Koontz. Also Philp K. Dick is my favorite science fiction auther. I'm a fan of the classics, myself, so I suggest 1984 by George Orwell, Roughing It by Mark Twain (anything else by Twain). I could go on, but I don't know your interests.
It's fun just to go into the bookstore, look around at some books, read the dust jackets, and see what looks interesting. The bookstore will also have the best seller list posted, and you can ask the people who work there what sells well after you discover what genre you're interested in. Reading is a wonderful thing.

I love to read! I firmly believe that reading increases your intelligence more then anything else.
I have recently gotten into Stephen King. I know he's mainstream but still a fantastic writer.
My all-time favorite book is Don't Stop the Carnival by Herman Wouk. It's about a man who buys a hotel in the Caribbean and all of the trouble he encounters after moving his family down there to run the hotel.
My 2nd favorite book is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. It is about a family of missionaries (it's not a religious book in ANY way) who move to Africa to 'convert' the people.
Another favorite is called Cry of the Kalahari. It is a true story of 2 graduate students who went into the Kalahari by themselves to study the lions and miraculously survived.
Have fun!!

my personal favorites
Piers Anthony
Incarnations of Immortality
Adept Series
Zanth Series.
I would suggest going to a second hand book store, you can get the books at half or less then market price and you can trade in as you read through the series to get the next book. I got ahold of almost all of them this way, only had to pay full price on a couple of the books.
By the way this Author is a Sci-fiction, Fantasy writer.
What an adventure!

What do you like? For a great laugh reading some non fiction essays - Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris is a hoot.
For a beautiful story - one that moves - A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving is wonderful
For a historical, yet fictional look at racism and a wonderful story about childhood, love and friendship - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is wonderful.
For an interesting look at the way economics can affect our lives - Freakonomics by Steven Levitt is a real eye opener. (He points out that statistically more children are killed by pools than by handguns - interesting thought, right? He asks the question about why Drug Dealers still live with their mothers - and points out the answer using statistical analysis of data as well as other forms of evidence.)
For a fictionalized account of what happened to one boy in Afghanistan - The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is marvelous.
For something fun - The Da Vinci Code is a real page turner, if you haven't had it spoiled by the movie.
The Harry Potter series is truly appealing for adults as well...
If you like Fiction, or non fiction, checking out the Pulitzer Prize winners for the past few years is a great way to read a variety of works.

My suggestion is to go to the library and check out books from different genres (sci-fi, romance, history, autibios, suspense, etc.) to discover which one you like. Once you have found one (or a couple) that you really like, browse that section and read to your heart's content. You don't have to worry about re-selling books because you have the books on loan.
Good luck!

I recently started reading again and realized I enjoyed it so much more if I was interested in what I was reading. I love animals, so the majority of what I read is based on animals. The latest great read was "Marley and Me". Enjoy and have a blast.

Have you thought of trying alternate history novels? My favorite author is Harry Turtledove. He writes in such a way that you really think that the faux events really happened. I'm a history major in college and his books really make me think "what if".
