We're both trumpet players, I'm on 1st, he's on 2nd. He keeps looking over my shoulder and playing my part....badly. If it is a part I'm struggling with myself, I find it hard to cover his mistakes as he has one main volume..loud! Sometimes, when there's a solo or easier passage, he jumps to my part and plays it badly, but when it is a loud or difficult part (a part that I could do with a hand) he's straight back to 2nd. I've offered to swap seats, which he doesn't want. He's becoming a pain and I don't know how to tactfully tell him that when I need his help, I'll ask ,but until then, stick to 2nd

Every time he starts to play your part just stand up with your instrument at your side. He'll very soon get the message!

As you have asked him and he hasn't responded you have been very fair so now you must speak with the person in charge of the band. If he is doing this to be nasty (and you are sure) then this must be put over when making the complaint. If you consider he is oblivious to what he is doing that it is annoying you so much that can be explained to your leader too and he should be able to handle the situation tactfully.

I would actually tell him just like that.
I mean when you ask him to switch seats that is kinda tactful asking him if he wants to switch or not.
I would just come out and tell him he needs to stick with 2nd until he is appointed 1st.
He needs to stay off your part period because that is making you look bad.
Has the director said anything about this?

i would tell him straight ...

the truth hurts , but it sets you free .

The alternative is that you put up with it , and that is patronizing him ..

think about it .. if someone had a problem with you ... you'd want to know , rather than be the topic of a conversation like this ..

good luck ...

dont worry , you sound nice ... if you are nice nobody will be angry with you ... after all you have built up a reputation ..

well your main problem is that your nice and hes obviously not so you have to come down to his level of thinking when the situation arises start to play as you should on your music sheet if he starts as well just ignore him someone in the band will realise soon enough because when hes supposed to playing he wont because he will think that you will be playing it instead, thus making himself look like a prat on the extreme side give me his phone number and me and the boys will pop round and have a word in his shell like.

I definitely have been a classical saxophone participant for over 30 years. throughout the time of those years I definitely have had the misfortune to be attentive to fifteen female clarinet gamers. all of them have been somewhat undesirable classical clarinet gamers. all of them wore glasses and long lower back dresses with little cleavage. After each overall performance they could flow abode the two to verify a e book or wash their fingernails. I definitely have in no way difficulty-free a warm female clarinet participant. Now in case you had asked me "...is a guy who performs the clarinet interior the stay overall performance band nerdy or warm?" i might desire to unquestionably respond "warm!" desire this facilitates.
