Let's try a few examples out to see what the different effects are:

We will be at the playground.
We are going to be at the playground.

Will you wait for me there?
Are you going to wait for me there?

I will study hard tonight.
I am going to study hard tonight.

It seems like they can be used rather interchangeably. There is a slight nuance that I can't pinpoint. The "will" sounds a little more formal, I suppose.

The two differences are time and certainty

"are going to" may imply that you are about to do it right now whereas "will" expects a qualification as to when it will happen.

"will" implies assertiveness in that it 'will' happen whereas "are going to" has an air of uncertainty about it

" Will " has a more definite intention than " are going to " and besides " are going to " being number sensitive they are pretty much interchangeable.
