Ok, i recently built a new computer, and decided i would give my old computer to my sister. Now, I am pretty handy when it comes to computers, but I am stuck. Somehow, she managed to get various pieces of junk in the tower itself. I had wiped the system previously, and now there is no OS on it. Heres the issue: The cd rom drive will recieve no power when it is plugged into the mobo. Its gets power when its unplugged, but none when it is. How can i get an OS on the computer without the cd rom drive? Thanks

Get your hard-disk off your PC, and plug it in someone other's PC, install the OS in this hard-disk. Then plug it back to your PC.

I'm guessing you may have a short. Possibly on the board but check the IDE cable first. It's amazing how often this is overlooked and yet since it's the cheapest part and the easiest to change it should be the first thing checked. You can do as the other answer says and try things with the parts from your "known good" new system. Good news is CDROMs are cheap, in fact for the money CDRWs are a great buy if you need to replace current drive. Change the Sys Bd only after you have exhausted every other avenue. You don't mention anything about the age or make of the old computer but some National brand chassis do not upgrade well if you have to start buying parts. You may be better off to get a standard chassis for your new Sys Bd to go into. Good Luck.

Depending upon how old the computer is... Some computers wont boot to cd-rom.

If I understand you correctly, your computer wont turn on period if you have the CD ROM plugged in. Which means it may be fried, or it may mean you should try an different power connection on the board.

If I were you, i would take the CDROM out of your own computer you build, stick it in hers, and see if it will start up, install an OS then put the CDROM back in yours for the time being.

If the issue perists, then something probably is wrong with your motherboard or power supply.

The power supply sends power through the board, it is connected by that big white fat rectangle connection that has tons of tiny wires in it...

Check that specific connector to make sure its making a solid connection.

Otherwise, your power supply is connected directly to the CDROM, in which case either A the CDROM is bad, or B the power supply is bad.

You can pick up a new cdrom and/or power supply for like 20 bucks these days.
