The term is homology, and it means two genes from different organisms that share a common function and evolutionary origin.

Let me begin with an example to explain what homology means in terms of genomics.
You take the ribosomal RNA gene of man, monkey, and horse.
Next, you determine the base sequence of the human gene.
Similarly you determine the base sequence of the same gene from monkey and horse.
Now do the point-wise comparison. If their sequences are identical, then there is a perfect sequential homology. If the sequence differs at a couple of places then you have to conclude that that during the course of evolution there occurred mutation in it.
Greater the similarity in base sequence, greater the homology. Homology points to common origin.

Homeo means stay. Ology means study and science of. Litterally it's the science of sameness but each University will have it's own definition and there will be a modern day term that most recognise.
