Apparently, out of every 10 films, around 7 will lose money, 2 will break even or make a little profit, and 1 will make such a huge profit, as to cover the rest. The costs of making, filming, producing, marketing, distributing can be very high and if its a flop (no cinema/DVD major sales) it loses a considerable amount. Interestlingly, Hollywood gets around a 10% return due to the large number of loss making films meaning that they could probably make the same amount of money by just putting it into a high-interest bank account!

Films make money by selling tickets to people, selling DVDs, and running the film on TV. They can also make money by advertising companies products in their film, by having, say, every character in the movie drink Coco-Cola. Every film studio gets a percentage of what their film brings in, after the theatres and stores get their share.

Movies tend mostly to not make money.
Movie companies sell to DVD & Video, Cable & Sattelite TV, Download etc. after they go on general release - a good movie is an eternally marketable one - one that people want to see for years and years on TV.
Also there is the lovely thing invented for the original Star Wars movie - franchising.
