I am about to graduate from University and have absolutely no idea what I want to do or become- it is quite daunting to be going out in to the real world with no idea of what I should do.

I get really in to something for say a fortnight, really read up on it, then just as soon develop another obsession with something entirely unrelated- this carries on in a never-ending cycle, so please don't say I need to find something new to really interest me!

What can I do to give my life focus? Thanks!

I hate to say this, but you either know what you want to do or you don't. (It's taken me about 12 years to find something I know I want to work at). If there is anything academic you are interested in, and you can afford it, then I'd suggest doing an MSc/MA or further qualification just to give you an edge. You might discover a bit more in another year. Otherwise try a few different sorts of jobs by temping. You could work abroad for a while - languages are always useful!

It's difficult to chose a career when you've no idea what to do but talking to your careers officer at Uni might help a bit. Whatever you do, best not try to turn a hobby into a job no matter how much you love doing it. Often you won't earn enough and even if you do, you'll ruin it as a hobby (I've had friends who've become freelance photographers and ended up hating it despite being really talented). Best of luck.

Just start doing something and you'll start finding openings. My first job was as a very low paid charity adviser in Prague. Then a German charity hired me to work in Russia and Africa, as I had a fantastic time. Then I got married, came back to the UK, applied for dozens of jobs and worked as a Prison officer for 8 years (highly recommend it - half are now graduates and it's a fascinating job). Now I run a Post Office and shop and am about to buy a Day Nursery.

NONE of this was predictable. I only got hired for the first job because they couldn't find a Czech speaker.

The trick is just to start and then the openings and options come along. Some choices you make yourself, some are thrust on you by force of circumstance, but you will not be as in control of it as you may like to think.

You meet someone and end up in a different country. You fall ill. Your child falls ill and you give up work. Your employer sacks you because the accountant ran off with a fortune. A new product comes along that makes your business obsolete (my uncle was a watch mender).

You have some control. But life has a lot too. Just start anywhere and see where it takes you.

My father was fixed on a certain career until a single bad report (mostly unjustified) meant no further promotion. He died of stress related cancer in his forties. He thought he was in control but he wasn't.

Your life needs some focus but don't worry too much about it. Just go with the flow and, as someone said, do some charity work - you'll meet new people and opportunities and realise how very lucky you are.

See what you can find on "hyperfocusing". That was your 2nd paragraph is describing. It's common among people with ADD, but you don't have to have ADD to have it.

All I can say as far as what to do for a career is make sure what you go into can make money. Get work you can both live with, and live on.
