I'm doing my chemistry and I would love some one to tell me the answer! Or something similar...
is it something to do with van der waals? I can't find it anywhere! I need it for friday!! Please save my soul - my teacher will kill me!!!

As a few people have said it's because a double bond is one sigma and one pi bond. HOWEVER ....the sigma bond is NOT formed from "spherical" orbitals....how could it be when there ARE no spherical outer orbitals in carbon? For ethane the orbitals on C are 4 identical sp^3 hybrids, for ethene they are 3 identical sp^2 hybrids and one unhybridised p-orbital. It's the unhybridised orbital on each carbon that overlaps to form the pi- bond. The sp^2 orbitals are in a plane at 120degree angles from each other and the p-orbital lies above and below the plane. This means that it can only overlap side-to-side (imagine 2 figure 8's side by side like 88) which means it's a smaller degree of overlap and therefore a pi bond is not as strong as a sigma bond.

Rose got it right. In a sigma bond, the electron clouds around the atom are spherical, and they intersect head-on. (How else could two spheres intersect?) But in a pi bond, the electron clouds are tall and skinny, and the edges just barely overlap. So the bond isn't as strong. A sigma bond and a pi bond together are stronger than just a sigma bond, but not twice as strong.

when ever there is a single bond, the force of attraction betwen the particles is more than a double bond, so there is greater atraction betwwen the carbon and hydrogen in ethane compared to ethene

in ethene the double bond signifies the presence of a sigma bond and a pi bond.Sigma bonds are stronger than pi bonds due to greater overlapping.so overall bond dissiciation energy of ethene will be higher but it won't be twice as strong as etane mlecule.

Rose is right, it's to do with pi bonds and sigma bonds. In ethane the C-C bond is a sigma bond, but in ethene there is one sigma bond and one pi bond.

The bonds involved are covalent ones where the electrons are being shared

and I think the answer to you question is because of the electron-electron replusion between the two bonds in the double bond.

Yeah hug the girls or stay with the guy because they are so sad for one reason or another! just stay with them and tell them u know how they feel when really we don't have a clue what they r going threw unless we go threw it our selves? like having to walk a few miles to go to work?
