On March 24, 1975, Ali fought Chuck Wepner in Cleveland, a fight that was to inspire the Academy Award winning movie Rocky. Ironically, however, it was Ali's opponent who provided the inspiration for history's most famous fictional pugilist. Wepner was a journeyman fighter who had been earning his living as a liquor salesman and security guard. Wepner had been dubbed "The Bayonne Bleeder" and, although he was ranked, he was considered hapless. Wepner, however, trained for two months and although he lost on a technical knock-out in the 15th round, he managed to knock Ali down with a body shot in the 9th. Sylvester Stallone saw the match in person and the concept of Rocky Balboa — an unknown club fighter who goes 15 rounds with the heavyweight champion — was born. Heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, the character portrayed by Carl Weathers, was loosely based on Ali.

Sylvester Stallone was inspired to create his Rocky character after watching Chuck Wepner "the Bayonne Bleeder" go 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali in a 1975 championship match. He showed a lot of heart and kept fighting when he wasn't suppose to last that long. He actually put Ali down in the 9th round but ultimately lost by TKO in the 15th. The other characters may resemble other boxers but were fictitious. Mr. T was fighting in tough man competitions and pretty much was the character they were looking for to play Clubber Lang. Sometimes they used actual boxers like Antonio Tarver - Mason Dixon and Tommy Morrison - Tommy Gun or wrestlers Hulk Hogan - Thunderlips; and other times they invented some like Dolph Lundgren -- Ivan Drago. definitely you can see similarities in the boxing world with other characters they use and of course in the most recent Rocky Balboa all the boxing analysts were actual boxing analysts.

The original Rocky movie character was based on a heavy weight boxer named George Chuvalo. None of the great heavyweights, including Ali, Frazier or Foreman could knock this man out. The only way he could be knocked out would be if the referee stopped the fight because of too much blood. Since he refused to be knocked out, he only lost fights where he did not get enough votes. A very tough man was George.

It was based on Chuck Wepner. Sly revealed it in Actor's Studio with James Lipton. Wepner was actually offered by movie producer to choose between 1% of the movie's revenue or $75,000. He chose the later. $75,000 is huge money at that time for Wepner compared to $8 million if he only knew how big the movie would become. today, Wepner is working in liquor store.

Supposedly, Sylvester Stallone wanted to be a pro fighter when he was young and envisioned the first "Rocky" movie in a dream that he had before putting pen to paper.

No Rocky Balboa is a made up character. However there was another in history whose name is 'Rocky Marciano'. He was perhaps one of boxings greatest champions but there is no relation to the movie character.
