Like "The rats deserting the sinking ship" - if a ship is sinking, not only the rats but everyone should desert it!
"What does not kill me makes me stronger" - like a broken leg?
"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it" - you can't cross a bridge before you come to it, what you mean is, you won't make any plans to overcome that difficulty before it arises.

It's gotta be “just be yourself”.

As a pointless default response it can be applied to anybody who craves advice in their hour of need, but you don’t know or care what they should actually do: “How do I get a girlfriend?” – Just be yourself. “How can I pass this interview?” – Just be yourself. “What can I do to make friends?” – Just be yourself. Let’s face it, if people hate you, you can't get a job *and* you can’t get laid, “being yourself” is probably exactly what you’ve been doing wrong…

I think the point of the 'rats' saying is that rats are supposed to be the first who notice that the ship is sinking and so have a higher chance of survival, same as executives selfishly leaving a company (early enough to still get a decent job at another company) before it goes bust
