Yes it is very easy to add a card.Your other option is a USB hub which is external. It plugs into one of you USB ports. It in turn has up to 5 usb ports which you can connect to.I'll list some links below so you can see what they look like.

A host controller is just the card that provides the USB ports. I take it that you're asking how to get USB 2.0 ?

You can buy a PCI card, given you have open slots, and install a controller to provide a USB 2.0 connection. You can buy these in as many ports as you want all most. I would check to see if you have any open PCI slots first. Then you can go just about anywhere and ask for a USB 2.0 PCI card. Installing it requires opening up your computer and plugging it into your motherboard.

They make add on cards for bothe desktops and laptops (they are different for each) that will give you USB2.0 ports. One will run you around $40-50. A desktop one will usually give you 4-5 USB ports. A laptop one usually gives you one usb port, so you would want to also buy a USB hub to go with it.

A USB host controller is just the fancy name for the driver that runs your USB port. It is called that becasue it "controls" the communciation between the devices and the computer.
