This is a question open to so much interpretation. I think a lot of characters are great for different reasons.
You have the 'real' people: Oskar Schindler, Karen Silkwood, Erin Brockovich, etc...
Then you have the truly fictional character: Forrest Gump, Darth Vadar, the mom from Manchurian Candidate, Mister Roberts, Aragorn, etc..
How can you choose just one?
