China, India, and what is now called Iraq were the first seeds of civilization. They all had fertile river valleys that flooded like clockwork. The all popped up around 3000 BC due to the success of the human species and the need for more food. Later cultures developed from scratch in the Americas such as the Inca and the Mayans.

As long as China sees value in having North Korea as a buffer state, no one is going to dive over the 38th Parallel without taking them into account. China has wanted to take Taiwan out of the picture for almost as long, but has not because of the USA's baking for Taiwan. It's a balance thing FYI - numbers, while important in war, are not the final answer. Remember the long lines of Iraqis walking south in Gulf War 1? Numbers do not mean squat if you can be hit and are unable to respond. That would be the situation the NK's would find themselves in.

This is a very interesting question. I looked up several references thinking the answer would be China with their rich culture before Christ, however, in my research discovered, "Ancestors of the Korean people lived in what is now Korea at least 30,000 years ago".
