This is not a critical herniated disc, but you want to avoid making it worse. A chiropractor is the best person to treat this problem. They specialize in pain management and should be able to help you live a comfortable life. I recommend you do water exercises three times a week such as: swimming or walking in water. This reduces any strain on the spinal area. If you have pain use moist heat for twenty minutes, nothing for twenty minutes, then apply an ice pack for fifteen minutes. This will reduce the pain and inflammation. I don't believe you will need surgery.

I have a herniated disc, L3 & 4 I believe and the neurologist said I didn't need surgery, that there wasn't really anything I could do to repair it and we'll just have to see what happens in the future- if it gets bad then I could have surgery. That is why my back hurts but definitely it helps so much to exercise and to not be overweight. He especially recommended swimming.

There is a newer decompression treatment that a friend of mine is doing in Las Vegas. It stretches the vertabrae over 20 treatments and allows the disc to return to normal size and return to its normal place. She has had three treatments and is already doing much better.
