I found the ending really confusing. The part where it shows you that the machine duplicates Huge Jackman is really weird. So Jackman gets shocked with electricity and the clone walked out of the box and the original Jackman(standing at the original spot of him being shocked) killed the clone, is that right? But on the performing stage, if Jackman were to use the machine and clones himself everytime he performs, wont it be that it is the clone who finished the prestige part? Because after he is being shocked with electricity he is instantly drowned. That just doesnt make much sense because it counters the part where he says he killed his clone everytime. Think about it. The guy being shocked has to be the real Jackman, because he can move 50meters in 1 second is by putting the box up there and having the clones walked ou of there but its just weird because that would mean the guy who is being drowned is the real Jackman. Its just very weird and confusing.. can anyone help me out? thx!

I thought it was the clone that got killed the first time the trick was done?

Because the Jackman who picked up the gun was at the electricity plateform and and shot the clone jackman that came out of the box? no?

but if i saw it wrong, it would make sense then.

he was always bracing himself because he knew that he would die every night. the original was the one that died, and the clone continued the show.

The original Jackman can't move 50 meters in 1 second. It is the clone that appears 50 m away in the balcony (remember the hats and the cats OUTSIDE). The "real" Jackman was killed the first time the trick was done. Since they are CLONES, they each BECOME the REAL one when the other dies. Each time the trick is done, the CURRENT Jackman gets in the machine and is cloned (the clone appears up in the balcony). The electricity is just a distraction to take the attention off the "original" Jackman falling through the stage (it makes him looks like he was zapped and disappears). Each time the trick is done, the one who was the CURRENT Jackman (the one who started the trick) sacrifices himself for the good of the trick). That's why there were so many of them at the end of the movie.

Had this same discussion with the group of very intelligent grad students I saw the movie with. It is a confusing ending. I think we ended up deciding that it did not matter -- he often was killing the original -- but the clone is still him so it mattered not. Weird huh? Some of us thought that the original was not the one finishing the prestige part, the original is the one who gets thrown to a different location, like the top hats appearing somewhere else. But we went round and round on it, and decided that the reason it took so much courage was that possibly the original is killed in the water tank(s).
