The doctor will estimate your due date based on the first day of your last period. It is just an estimate. Then when you go for your scan, they measure the foetus and are able to give you a more precise idea.

Well, first off, they are trained for years in Med. School to know everything there is about pregnancy and birth. They can more or less judge my doing a vaginal exam or measuring the fetus in a sonogram, there are different techniques. Some more experienced Doctors can tell right off with out too much. My Doctor told me how far along I was, by examining me and he was right on point. They also calculate the days from your last period to the present .

I think he has to mainly go by the dates that you give him....I guess the only other way is if you were quite far gone he could do palpatation of the uterus to establish the stage of the pregnancy but that would only work after you were three monnths gone as before that the uterus isnt big enough to pop out of the pelvic cavity. If you are anything like me and aren't sure of the date of your last period (as this is when the Doctor will take it from) then you will have to wait for the dating scan at 12 weeks to be told how far along you are. goodluck x

He or she will ask you when you last had a period and work out how far along you are from that. They take the first day of your period as the first day of your pregnancy. They can also calculate an approximate due date from the information you give them.

they take the first day of your last period and work it out from there.... The rule estimates the Expected Date of Delivery (EDD) from the first day of the woman's Last Menstrual Period (LMP) by adding a year, subtracting three months and adding seven days to that date. This approximates to the average normal human pregnancy which lasts 40 weeks (280 days) from the LMP, or 38 weeks (266 days) from the date of fertilisation.

He calculates your pregnancy from the first day of your last period. If you don't know when that is then she/he will send you for a dating scan.

They usually go by the date of your last period for starters.
When they do an ultrasound they can get the exact date.
They will measure your belly to be sure your baby is growing as it should after you start showing
