We actually have the same genetic content, it's just that at some point two monkey chromosomes fused to make one human chromosome. I believe it's human chromosome 2. This could have happened after divergence from the ancestral primate.

It is possible for a child to have a different number of chromosomes from its parent. For example, Downs Syndrome children have 47 instead of 46.

So some child of a monkey lost 2, or perhaps monkeys had only 46 when humans split off from them. Remember that the monkeys have been evolving since then too!

You are mistaken to believe that humans came from monkeys. If you review your human evolution you'll see it says primates had a common ancestor. Also possible that they had more than one ancestor.

It is entirely possible that our genetic ancestors did not have the exact same number of chromosomes.

Here's the thing: we did not come from monkeys...we had a common ancestor quite a ways back who may or may not have had a similar number of chromosomes.
