I watched the STS 121 flight back in July 2006 when Lisa N. and her crew launched. It was actually the 4th of July. Ironically, it's the only mission I've seen to date, from beginning to end through NASA TV. This lady stood out the most out of everybody when I saw the interviews, even when it was with the entire crew, because she was ALWAYS smiling. I thought there was something a little strange about it... but not in a negative way. Just stort of odd. Maybe it's the psychologist in me, but too much sadness or happiness isn't always a good thing. Looking at her before and after pics I have to say I think that this lady is bipolar. I can't say I'm too surprised about the situation either. Anyone else NOT surprised?? By the way, I think marital affairs among the astronauts is NOTHING NEW. They are after all, HUMAN.

Predictable that everyone is falling all over themselves trying to find some reason for her behavior that's not actually her fault. I have trouble believing someone could make it to space whilst hiding a significant psychological problem. That her behavior in this situation was bizarre is obvious, but people boiling over with anger do strange things. Maybe she thought the diaper trick was a clever use of her training to help cover her tracks by minimizing the number of people who might see her, etc.

I am totally surprised by recent events. I thought NASAs Astronauts were the most thoroughly vetted, physically and mentally, for such a thing to happen involving at least one, if not 2 or 3 individuals.

What would not surprise me is that there may be 2 or 3 openings in the Astronaut program soon.

As for the diaper thing, all Astronauts wear them during launch. They are used to them and consider them equipment to keep the mission in timeline. Strange to some of us, but she was "on a mission".

I am not a follower of astronaut behavior but I can say not many things surprise me in the world today. I heard on CNN this morning that she must have snapped somewhere in between the launch in July and today. Psychologists interviewed on CNN seemed to think so anyway. I also heard that there is an incredible "low" following a trip to outerspace because being there is such a "high". The thing that really is strange..... she wore diapers on her trip across country. NO MAN ON EARTH would push me to that point. How degrading.

I think you are reading a lot into it.

It was her first space flight and can you imagine being in her shoes for the exciting trip into space? You never felt the whole thing of being rocketted up into orbit and feeling this is what so many people can only dream of doing. Millionaires have to buy their way to do this and she was one of the privileged very few who are hand picked and paid to do it.

Back to earth this is a woman who was in a love triangle and she acted rather irrationally considering she was not exactly what you would call your typical Jerry Springer candidate it is amazing how a seemingly fully aware intelligent and skillful woman fall apart so irrationally over a man. But I am not over surprised as yes she is human but it is not like astronauts do this all the time.
Love is a big emotion but you can still be surprised that she had premeditated to kidnap and even murder this other woman. This would suprise me if any woman did this.

I suppose it does surprise me, primarily because astronaut candidates go through such intense screening before they get anywhere CLOSE to a space flight. I have a hunch that NASA and whatever other "powers that be" that are involved in the selection of candidates will be taking a good long look at their process, to see how a person who could do this managed to make it into the program.

well think about it. before the trip she's filled with the thought: "ALRIGHT! I get to go into space! :-D"
and after the trip she's thinking: "man...it hurts like hell to even stand up since zero-g has made my muscles atrophy and my bone density decrease. :-( "

what would your facial expression be in those situations?

addendum:
by the way, what makes you think marital affairs among astronauts is nothing new? you must be a Freudian hehe :-)
