Vasu is pretty close, but not quite right. Homology (in the sense that you are asking) refers to two genes that have the same function AND a common evolutionary origin.

Synteny refers to the level of similarity between the genomes of two organisms, mostly at the gene content level but also at the organization level.

Homology refers to basic underlying similarity. For example, wings of bat and flipper of whale. They are anatomically similar and similar in embryonic mode of origin but have different function.
Synteny refers to the occurrence of two or more genes on the same chromosomes. These genes can be separated by chromosomal rearrangements. In other words, disruption of synteny can spell divergent evolution, which is reflected by the study of homologous organs.
When it comes to genes, homology means that the same gene(e.g., gene for cytochrome c) in two different organisms(e,g,. man and monkey) has the same base sequence.Greater the sequential similarity, greater is the homology ,and thus greater evolutionary closeness(phylogenetic affinity).
