A wonderful question. And one that is asked over and over again to our politicians.
Come election time, politicians promise that everyone will be working, jobs will be made, and poverty will be practically eliminated. But when it comes time to produce the results, it never seems to happen.
The government developed a welfare system in this country that is supposed to help those in need. It seems that the only ones who can benefit from this are those who can, but do not, want to work, illegal immigrants, and those who scam the system. Those who ligitimately lost their jobs, are mentally or physically handicapped just cannot qualify for assistance.
I have a friend who is a double amputee, illiterate, and is married to a blind woman with chronic, debilitating emphysema. Both of them are older, and unable physically to hold a job. Their assistance checks are minimal at best, and their food subsidies are $10 per person, per month. But I have seen illegals get assistance with little to no resistance.
Years ago, there were mental institutions and hospitals that housed and treated the mentally ill. Some bottom feeder lawyer apparently sued and the hospitals pretty much let the patients out. Now you see so many mentally ill amongst the homeless. Also, those who lost their jobs due to layoffs, illness, or tragedy cannot get the assistance they need to recover, and they too end up homeless and on the streets.
It appalls me that we're sending money to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and other Middle Eastern countries who genuinely hate Americans and consider us "infidels" ripe for the killing, but we cannot send those billions of dollars to our own backyards to help those here in need. It's an abomination, and it surely reflects the true interests and concerns of our politicians.
I'm glad you care, and this was an important issue to bring up.

I guess we don't figure right and wrong based on what best greases our wheels. This is America, if these people choose to be homeless and starving who are we to deny them that. I have been to public housing. I have been behind the lady with food stamps. I work two jobs and live in a smaller apartment and where they are buying steaks, My basket contains beans and rice and maybe a day old rotisserie chicken. At some point, doing things correctly has got to be better than not and if there is anyone in this situation that is selfish, I agree with the person having put in the hours to get the paycheck thinking that maybe he should benefit from his labor.

There is no country that is perfect or has the perfect system for caring for children, elderly, the homeless, or for mentally deficient people. As for children, couples need to take responsibility for their own, instead of treating children like expendible commodities or toys. All children have a right to security, safety, proper health care, education, and LOVE. It starts with abortion rights, too. Disposing of a fetus for one reason or another is wrong, especially if a man or a woman doesn't "want" a child or "can't afford it". There are many people who would wish to adopt children and provide them with good upbringings. As for the elderly, every nation's greatness of heart should be judged by how we not only care for our children, but for our aged. Most states have affordable housing with rents determined by sliding scales based on wages or benefits received. Faith-based housing projects are in existence in all states. My church owns an apartment complex to house the needy and elderly without pre-conditions. As for drug dependent, lonely souls, "we" do not turn anyone into addicts or despondant individuals. That is a moral and spiritual issue & how much courage a person has to overcome adversity. There are drug outreach centers in every hospital in the US for those who need help. There are missions who provide shelter and food in most cities. There are centers where a person can be trained for employment, receive clothing, there are halfway houses, rehab centers available, and this country has developed more ways of caring for others than any other in the world. Ask yourself a question: "What have you done to contribute to helping someone who is "lost" or for someone who needs a meal, shelter, a job, clothing, or for a child who just needs a attention?" By the way, I've lifted myself up since being a reformed addict & alcoholic. Be an example, and make a difference one person at a time.

I agree with you 100%! We are spending billions on a war when our own citizens cannot eat, clothe their children or get a good basic education. I believe in domestication of the United States, we need to get ourselves straightened out before we can correct the world. It is a travesty!

How dare you say we do not take care of our children. Responsible parents takes very good care of their children, and the US is made up of more responsible parents than ones that are not. Another dumb comment about throwing our elderly out in the streets, that is even more dumb than the one about the children. As far as families remaining hopeless and homeless, there are thousands of agencies all over the US to help these people, they have to get off their butt and find it, make the trip to the correct places to get help. WE!! turn them into drug dependent, dirty lonely broken souls.???? Are you nuts, we do not do this, they do this to them self, we are the ones who pays for all their REHAB classes. WE?? adopt children from other countries and forget the needs of our own people.? Celebrities adopts children you speak of , to pretend like they just love children, but in reality, I feel sorry for them children they adopt, they do it for publicity, not love. As for as anyone else who adopts from other countries, it is their choice, not yours. You sure do use that WE word a lot. WE are not guilty of what YOU claim. WE do great things for all these people, where you from? You , cannot speak for all of us. WE, my as*s, you maybe , not WE.

First of all, you have it backwards for the most part. People don't become drug dependent, dirty, and lonely broken souls because they are homeless.
Its the drug users, dirty and lonely broken souls who become homeless.
As far as whole families go, it is generally because of severe economic problems and the families refuse or are too ashamed to seek assistance.

because some people don't see a world out side themselves. because some people don't know how to give. because some people don't know how to love. only when they realize they are all part of the same family and that it is there brothers and sisters dying on the street and it could happen to them will there be any changes.

Stop the illegals from taking American jobs. The argument of "there are some jobs Americans aren't willing to do" is crap. If your family is starving, you'll do what it takes.

The homeless and starving are that way because of choices they have made, and nothing else.
