Black is a very unstable color in goldfish. 90% of goldfish that are born black will turn orange or white withing a year or so. This is a one way street. Goldfish cannot gain black pigment once they are born. If they turn black along the fins ever, its ammonia burns.

RE:
Why have my black Oranda fish turned orange??
I have had 6 Oranda fish for a year now, 3 orange ones and 3 black ones. About a month ago one of the black ones started to turn orange, and now all the black ones are orange. I have no idea why this has happened, or if my orange fish might turn black! Any insights you may have will be greatly...

That's perfectly natural. All goldfish are born black as a defence mechanism. Once old enough they will turn orange (mostly). Nothing to worry about.

The black on the fin sound somewhat like and ammonia burn. Some fish are more prone to a small ammonia spike than others. Did you just recently wash out the filter? If u did, that is what might have caused the ammonia spike. That said, the fin turning black is a sign that it is healing.

One simple answer - its old age.
Just like us, we go grey as we get older
For fish, they lose pigmentation under their scales, therefore losing their colour, most goldfish will turn white, some orange!
So no need to worry!!

i think it is because they have grown up so when they are younger - like when you had them - they are black and then when they are older they turn orange it is just that they are older.
Good Luck!!

many of the goldfish that are sold as blacks are simply fish who have not changed from the baby color into their adult coloration
not all babies change colors at the same time, I usually cull
(destroy) any who do not have color by the age of 6 mos

They were working under-cover. Now you've gone and outed them.
