I think it is a very common pronoun that takes the place of nouns, such as in this sentence.
The iron is on, did you leave it on?
I won't mention anything else, in case this is a test of how many people will dare mention that special (IT)
It rained today, It will rain tomorrow, has it rained yet?
Look at all the possiblitlies that "it" has, the possibilities are limitless.
It goes on and on just like the Energizer Bunny.
