As long as the angle of swing is less than 10degrees to the vertical they can be descibed by simple harmonic/pendulum motion

They swing at a rate which depends only on the length of the pendulum, not on how hard you push them. So they were used to keep clocks running at a constant speed before the invention of the quartz clock.
