Germany Breaks Treaty Of Versailles

He rearmed Germany for starters. Germany had been allowed only a very limited navy and army following World War I. He went well beyond these limitations.

Then he interfered in another nation's internal affairs by aiding Generalissimo Franco in Spain. Finally, he began expanding Germany by taking over such neighbors as Czechoslovakia and Austria.

These aggressive actions clearly violated the intent and spirit of the Treaty of Versailles.

The treaty was very unpopular in Germany. The WWI allies would have had to go to war again to enforce the imposed provisions on Germany. The political and popular will to go to war to enforce the treaty just didn't exist. Hitler must have recognized this lack of will and took a calculated risk.

In every way.

He formed a permanent, standing army.

He formed a functioning Air Force.

He formed a navy which included ships in gross excess of the weight limitations set by the treaty.

He did everything the Treaty said he couldn't. In the beginning he was sneaky about it - like using a government-sponsored "recreational glider" program to train his fighter pilots - but towards the end, right before WWII started, he got really obvious about it.

And all of Europe sat back on its hands and did NOTHING about it until it was too late.
