I have a Compaq Presario 1245 laptop with a memory max. of 160 MB ( I think), a 3.5 GB HD, and Win 98SE. (I know...don't laugh!!). I am adding a 30 Gig hard drive with XP on it, and I have a 256 MB Ram card. Considering that upgrade, would the laptop get any use from that extra memory?, would it be a waste?, too much? Can you go over 256? (considering that there is allready a Ram card on it). Any input would be great, thanks!!

I believe you would not be happy with the end results. That AMD 333Mhz processor would make it painfully slow. There are some RAM modules that will allow you to install above the reported max RAm. I would try the 256Mb RAM module first. If your computer reconizes the extra RAM then I would use it.
Personally I had XP Home on 3 P-II 350mhz computers with 128Mb of RAM. When I had the chance I formatted and installed Windows 2000 Pro. It is as fast as 98se but far more stable. I used them till this assed Christmas when we upgraded the kids computers. I still have them but are spares.
Even at 160Mb of RAM you should have not problem with W2k and IMO will be much happier on that computer.

Good Luck

I think it would be easier to just buy a new laptop altogether, especially as the days of Windows Vista are just opening and Windows XP is slowly moving out of the way.

Especially since your laptop is on Windows 98SE, I'm not sure if the motherboard could recognize more than 256 MB of memory. It depends mostly on the motherboard, really... Also, you should take into consideration your processor. Is it fast enough to run Windows XP? You didn't mention that.

ALSO, it could be quite expensive to buy the memory that fits your laptop, after you identify which type you need.

No way. 1Gb memory isn't even sufficient to run abode windows Vista or abode windows 7 at any good velocity. you will want a bare minimum of a minimum of 2Gb to run abode windows properly (and in all risk 3 or 4GB to run a number of the intense-end laptop video games). The Intel Celeron Processor is very low-spec (choose for a twin-center Centrino) and the different ingredient that concerns me is the spec of the GMA X4500 Video photos Card. That laptop could be somewhat okay to browse the information superhighway & verify your email, yet this is approximately all. that is not effectual sufficient to observe any intense-spec photos (youtube clips, video clips, or laptop video games).

No it is not a waste. It has good effect on your computer performance and processing speed.
And also you should have this idea in your mind that windows XP consumes more memory that Windows SE.
Enjoy using your new Ram ;)
