Silicon Valley is a nickname, not a geographic formation.
It describes the area of the South San Francisco bay where so many of the technology firms were started/formed. Silicon was the nickname, as it was the material most processing chips were made from. The valley, prior to the tech boom, had the nickname "Valley of heart's delight".

One of my favorite movies.
It might not be real, or it's where it all started.
