Have you ever seen other pictures like this, where the moon appears so huge in the sky? Are these types of pictures real?

If so, on what places of the Earth does this happen? I live in Hawaii, and have never seen the moon appear this big. When a full moon is near the horizon, it can look pretty big, but nothing like the ones in those pics.

Can someone explain why this happens in some areas? Or, is this all some optical illusion?

I do realize that this picture is fake; that's not what I'm asking, please read.

I'm asking about the size of the moon.

The moon appears bigger close to the horizon but that is an optical illusion which happens in your brain. You can cover the moon by your little finger nail at arms length whether it is on the horizon or at the top of the sky. This is the same no matter where in the world you are.

But you can make the moon look huge by taking a photo through a telephoto lens. In this way you can make a scene that is very far away look close and the moon will be much bigger in the photo. If that photo of the bridge was taken from about 10 miles away through a magnifying lens, then the moon would be that size.

The angular size of the Moon is always the same, even when it is near the horizon. It changes slightly during its orbital turn around the Earth due to the elliptical form of its orbit, but this change is practically negligible.

The constant angular size of the Moon can easily been proved with the aid of telescopes or even with simple optical devices. The apparent differences are subjective (when it is near the horizon) or just perspective effects.

Your moon in Hawaii is absolutely the same as the moon in other places. So the moon of the photo could be some 'Photoshop' manipulation or some perspective trick, in order to obtain an amazing effect.

No, it's not real. That's a composite picture - look at the way the clouds are hidden by the moon, rather than the other way round.
