It depends on how old the Black person is. If the person is over 75 years old, colored is fine and he/she will likely find being called Black or the more modern and politically correct, African-American offensive. However for young or middle aged Blacks in America your can't go wrong with Black.

It's not wrong, but on the other hand it's not right!
As a coloured person could well be purple/green or even a lighter shade of pale!
Brown or Black is more acceptable.

I am white so dont know how a black person feels when they hear this but I prefer to keep it simple and just call them black. After all that is how they refer to themselves.
Too all the people who say we should call them 'African-American' how have you made the distinction of their race? Are there no actual Africans anymore?

why don't you just call people be their names, and if you don't know them say excuse me. Why would you wanna refer to someone as COLORED anyway? This was a label tagged to African people in America and Europe to help keep the African from identifying with their heritage. And 'til this day millions of Africans or the so called African America run from what they truely are and that is an African people.

I don't think they even know what they want to be called. I've heard some of them want to be called black, others want to be called african american, some want to be called black american. Once they make up their minds and just want to be called people, then we'll let you know.
