South Africa was banned indefinitely from international cricket in 1970, owing to the apartheid policies of its government. The ban was lifted in 1991 and South Africa entered the Cricket World Cup for the first time in 1992.

The South African team was banned from all international cricket from 1970-1992 due to the Apartheid regime that was in place. The aparthied movement was hugely controversial due to its severe racism, and when English player Basil D'Oliveria was not allowed entry into the country as he was coloured (originally from Souht Africa), it came to the fore in sporting circles. The ICC put the ban in place, and South Africa were actually subsequently banned from many sports as a result of this.

During that time many countries had player groups that formed "rebel" tours to the South Africa, particularly England and Australia. Players who went on these tours faced 3 year bans from ICC sanctioned cricket.

The South African cricket was isolated from the international cricket, as a result of ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1970, because of its government's apartheid policies.
