Hello there. I will be happy to answer your question, I hope I can help.
What you are asking seems likes a pretty simple question but it is more complicated that you might think.
Your body is complex, perfectly designed and really a wonder. Everything happens for a reason and the more you understand about how it works the more fascinating it becomes.
What you need to know in regard to ovulation is this: your ovary will release an egg *half way between the period you just had and the one that you are expecting*. Now, for those lucky ladies who can count on their calender and know with certainty that their period will start on a certain day, this is really helpful information. But, if you are one of those women who is a bit different each month or who seems to react to stress and other things to throw your period off, then your day of ovulation is going to be different also.
For the sake of our conversation lets assume that you are on a 28 day cycle. Counting the first day of your period as day number one you can be pretty sure that on the 28th day you will be starting your menstrual bleeding again. That means that on day 14 you ovulated. Does that mean that you should wait for day 14 and then make love all day like a the energizer bunny? Nope. Let me explain to you the way this works ( and excuse me if you already know). The production of estrogen and progesteron waxes and wanes during your monthly cycle. We all know about the fluctuationg hormones that can make us fatigued, grouchy, cause slight weight gain or bloating, it is different for each woman. Some do not experience PMS at all. Anyway, the ebb and flow of these hormones cause your cervix to produce a specific kind of fluid, or almost no fluid. After your period the vagina tends to be dry, soon it will become wetter and wetter. This interesting fluid that your cervix makes does a great deal more than provide lubrication. It acts as a river for the sperm to follow. Once the sperm is safel from the alkaline environment of the vagina (where it could only live 30 minutes to 4 hours), it is protected by the fluid that the cervix produces at the time of ovulation. This fluid enables the sperm to easily travel up the fallopian tubes so that it can be ready and waiting for the newly released egg. This is more important than you might imagine. Once released the egg is only capable of being fertilized for twelve to 24 hours. That give a serious advantage to he early arrivals. As you can see making love before you ovulate will put the sperm in the best possible posotion to be ready to fertilize the ripened egg.
The cervical fluid that is produced when you ovulate can help the sperm live from three to five days rather than the short 30 minutes to four hours that it would survive without it.
Ideally making love a few days before you ovulate is a really good idea, I would also try on the day of ovulation. After that your chances of conceiving start to taper off. By the time the sperm get where they need to be the egg will no longer be viable.
That is it in a nutshell and I hope I have answered your question.
You can see that much success depends on beng able to accurately pinpoint the time when you actually ovulate. Many women are very good at being able to tell when they ovulate and then there are women who don't have the slightest idea.
Good luck honey and I hope that I have answered your question. If there is anything that I can help you with or if you think of anything else you want to know feel free to write to me and I will certainly write back!
Good luck honey, you have so many wonderful experiences ahead of you that I envy you! Really!
Have fun! This is a wonderful time in your life!
Love and Blessings

Well, you can't actually conceive until you DO ovulate. (And won't be pregnant until the egg implants in the uterus about 10 days later.) But sperm deposited 2 days before ovulation can definitely fertilize that egg once it does show up.

From day10 of your cycle with day one of your cycle being the first day of your period. But only have intercourse every 48 hours. If you do too often the man will not have enought time to build up enough sperm. I had to do this to get my 3 year old.
You usually ovulate around day 14 of your cycle. One way to try to help determine is to take your temp as soon as you wake up. While still in bed. When you are ovulating your temp will change. I do not remember for sure but I think it goes up. You can a BBT thermometer at your local drug store. (BBT basal body temp: temp of first waking while still in bed)
