My daughter is almost eight months old, we have been through TONS of illness. She refuses the pedialite, takes only a little bit of water, and rarely finishes her bottles. What other options do I have??

It is a tough situation, my niece also refuse the baby bottle every time. I guess she hates the rubbery taste of the nipple.

If you have ever feed medicine with the baby bottle, that will be worse!

Try to feed her some glucose water, it should do no harm to her.

And most important, please try to feed your baby while she is sleeping (Don't wake her up). Just tease her with the baby bottle on her lips, she would start to drink without noticing what she is doing... In no time she will drink it off.

We didn't know this could work, until we try it with my nephew. He is much healthier than my niece! At least he got enough nutrition.

First, do not add honey to water as one person suggested. You are not supposed to give honey to children under one years old...botulism spores.

I have 3 children and have been through this many times. At least she is taking a bottle. That is great. You could try pedialyte pops, jello, or any kind of popsicle. Sometimes children prefer Gatorade to Pedialtye and doctor's recommend giving them that. You'd be suprised at how little they actually need. If she is taking some water and a bottle that is a good thing. If she continues to refuse liquids, watch for signs of dehydration (loose skin, very lethargic, bulging fontanel, etc). If she gets that bad they will give her IV fluids at an urgent care or emergency room. When my daughter was 1 year old, she threw up for 5 days and would not take hardly any liquids. I took her to the doctors and they couldn't do anything, but recommend I go to the ER if she became lethargic. I took her to the ER twice and they gave her IV fluids, but they would only give them to her once she had lost a ton of weight and was practically non responsive. It was very sad and scarry.

Once when I was little, my mom gave me a cup of water and a toothbrush and I dipped it in the water and sucked the water off of it. She said I drank enough for them to keep me out of the hospital. It didn't work with my youngest daughter, but it has worked with my oldest daughter and my son. Good luck and I hope your daughter gets well soon.

I have seven children and oh, how I know what you are talking about. One of my kids did the same thing and I took them to the doc and found out they had sore throat. It's a possibility. My two year old ran a fever off and on for a week and would not drink pedialyte or much of his bottle. I bought freezer pops and popsicles. They love those. If you can get them to finish at least a fourth of one you are doing good. You could also try the pedialyte pops and even gatorade. They prefer the sugar taste and it works. If it persists a long time I would take her to the doctor. Good luck, I know it can be really frustrating and tends to worry you to death.

once in a while especially while sick a popsicle wont hurt....thats basically what pedialite is and is typically appealing to all ages. Sometimes drastic times call for drastic measures....Im not above bribing my child if its for their own good...a little bit of flavor in the water etc...

Is she on juice yet? you may want to start pushing it more. and if shes just not interested in the bottle at all, try a cup.

what we did with our baby boy was this. simply gave him a bit (just a bit now don't go spoiling him) of apple juice with his water (and i mean the good 100 % stuff not the fake stuff. we used martinelli's its 100% pure) anyway, we added to his water and he would only take it that way. slowly we took the juice out each time he drank it and after a month he didn't even know juice wasn't in it (but trust me if you try to trick them to early-they'll know)

give that a shot. seemed to work for a few others i know.

oh and he never used a bottle he was drinking from cups (once in awhile a sippy cup) so try it in a cup or sippy cup. i know its a hassle..but hey-you did have a kid..did you think it would be easy?

good luck and be patient. babies know when you get upset with them.

Sometimes I seem to have this problem with my little one, but I make sure I get someone to clap or stomp their feet really loud - something so loud it takes their mind off what u are actually doing. Even if you do force feed her water and she only has little sips at a time - shes at least getting that - better than nothing!

Try 7-up water. Mix half 7-up to 1/2 water.

That's a tuff call. a doctor could give them an IV water injection of things get too bad, but my guess is that she hasn't gotten to that stage.

Gawd, stressfull, isn't it??? Try putting a bit of honey in warm water, dissolving a bit and maybe then she'll drink it. I mean in a perfect world babies shouldn't be drinking sugared water but the aim here is just to get fluids into her, right????

PEACE & GOOD HEALTH
