I have a small fluorescent shop light for over my Toucan's cage that is all metal, glossy white finish. I want to paint it--probably black, preferably matte, and was planning on using something like Rustoleum spray paint...

Is this a good idea? Will it hold over the glossy factory paint? Would it be better to forgo the matte and go glossy over glossy? It's important that it last and look good as it will be in my home...

Always when painting anything make sure the surface is clean. Preferably use a primer first and when painting a glossy surface "rough" it up with sand paper or steel wool so the paint will adhere. Using this technique you can paint glossy or matte over glossy or matte and achieve good results.

I am sure you are aware that the light reflected when going from black to white will be much less?

Try using appliance paint. It is a higher grade and should go right over the existing glossy paint.

just rough it up with sandpaper then clean it well and let dry, then the rustoleum will work nicely.
