Hi dear!
Well Filtering is just a way to orderly recieve your mails in different folders. Meaning Organizing your Mails!
See, you have three folders Inbox, Friends, Univ.
you can use filtering to recieve any mail from your friends' email IDs into Friends! Any mail from Univ email IDs into Univ. etc. Also you can even stop messages from any particular Email ID or a whole domain(Meaning any mails containing gmail.com or yahoo.com can be sent to a particular Folder or can even be blocked). Like, if you dont want to recieve message from abc@yahoo.com then you can block it. Satisfied? Then plz reply to this posting!

You can use filtering options to put tags on emails (say you want your best friend's email to be labeled as "best friend"), to mark emails as trash so you don't have to see them in the inbox (in case Gmail isn't catching spam), and you can also mark them to be starred so they stand out in the inbox. Starred emails can also be viewed alone, without the unstarred ones, and can be selected as a group.
What do you mean "can we read anyone's messages by filtering it"? Since Gmail doesn't have any folder options (only tag options, which imo isn't as nice), you can find all your emails in one of three places: in the inbox, in the trash (or spam box, if it got caught), or in the archived folder. You just need to know where the email is, then you can read it.

Filter = stops some thing to move to other side
same way here in GMAIL
FILTER will mark as those incoming mails with certain labels
If you are receiving a lot of mails from a group( a fitness or musical blah blah) you can use the filter option to label as "sports" and categorize it from other mails.
Labels are shown in the left hand side and if you are click now the label "sports" only mails regards to sports will be displayed. So it is easy to use.

Email filtering is the processing of electronic mail to organise it according to specified criterion. Most often this refers to the automatic processing of incoming messages, but the term also applies to the intervention of human intelligence in addition to artificial intelligence, and to outgoing emails as well as those being received. For reference, if you had 3 friend's emails that you wanted to go to another folder that you created instead of going to the Inbox, you could create a filter to route those emails to that new folder that you created and they would bypass your Inbox.
