Yes. They are obviously insecure and need to put others down in order to make themselves feel better. The best thing to do is ignore and take the moral high ground. Don't give them the satisfaction of letting them know what they have said has hurt you.
Alternatively, if what they have said is about someone else and completely out of order, I would tell them where to go and then some. I don't tolerate people talking trash.

For the 1st part of the question: 'Hate' destroys one who hates and not the one who is hated. Therefore hate no one. For the 2nd part of the question: Avoid them to the extent possible, without offending them. When they start commenting on somebody else, just smile, listen sympathetically for a while with 'is it so etc', then gently say that you are not interested in somebody Else's weaknesses, but are interested in reducing you own weaknesses and invite suggestions.

We try to deal with that with love. As much as some people maybe the most unlovable people in this world when we compare ourselves with Christ we aren't that far off. Yet with all that He had He came down on the cross just to die for our sin. What a wonderful God ^^
