You do not need any router, if you have only two computers.
If you want to connect more than two comps then and then only you need the hub or router.
You can connect two computers just by cross crimping the two ends of the cables. Cross crimping means the changing of order of the inner color cables at both end. You can get its easily done at the shop where you bough this cable. Just connect this cable to ethernet ports of you computers. And do the settings.
Best of luck!

If you are sharing the internet, get a router switch for both networking and also firewall protection. Then use regular cat5 cables. Use a wireless version if you have a wireless laptop to eliminate some of the wires.
To simply connect the two, you need a crossover cable.
But switches and hubs are so cheap, I would go that way.

If you don't have a hub or router, then your cable going from one computer to the other must be a "crossover" cable. This is not a normal cat-5 cable - a pair of wires (send/receive) are reversed on one end of the cable so that it works correctly.

If the systems you have are of 'latest' models, then you can connect both of them with the CAT 5 cable, you don't need a reverse cable for it.
Connect them, enable DHCP. Both will get two different IP addresses in that common pool. Access them together.
If they are old model, then you have to use reversing. You can get the corresponding RJ45 reverse modules or cables in any of the computer stores.

I believe you do have to reverse one pair of cables when you connect without a hub?
