The most "American" city. yes. ONE of the best, yes.
It's diverse and has a little bit of everything. There are extremes in wealth and poverty. There is a lot of culture and many cultures to be celebrated. Because there is so much room to expand (land wise) it is clean and the streets are broader than NYC (don't know about LA). It could be clean because the wind keeps sweeping everything away though :)
Chicago has its own, unique flavor and energy. The energy you feel on the street isn't the same as NYC's, LA's, or Atlanta's. It's more laid back than NYC, more robust than Atlanta, and not Hollyweird like LA.
It's also one of the biggest, most spread out, with the widest range in temps (from below zero in the winter to near 100F in the summer).

It's actually got nothing to do with wind. The nickname "Windy City" was given to Chicago because when New York and Chicago were competing for the World's Fair over a hundred years ago, a New York journalist commented that the Chicago politicians were "old windbags."

Without question. Chicago is by far one of the cleanest cities in the country. How many places can you say that about? (Not NY for sure.) There is always tons of things to do, great museums and nightlife, and it is a great place to raise a family. The skyline is the best in the country. The only bad thing is the weather during the winter months. It is pretty cold here right now, a high today of 1.
New York is o.k., but everyone there is always so grouchy. I once heard a quote that "Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's God given right." Boy, I want to go there!!!

Without a doubt. It combines the best of the two big cities on each coast (NYC and LA) but without the attitude of both. Culturally, it has everything those places has to offer and more. So many of the top actors, singers, writer, etc. may live in those cities, but a lot of them got their start here. A franchise in every major sport (TWO in baseball), world class art museums, internationally recognized restaurants, pretty decent public transportation (well, they have had some problems lately), the cost of living is still pretty low (you can find a decent apartment in a decent neighborood for about $600-700; try finding THAT in NYC or LA), the streets are relatively clean for a city of this size (NYC has piles of garbage right in front of your door when you leave for work - yuk), major shopping (Nike and Apple, among others, both chose to have flagship stores here), some of the best architecture around (the skyscraper was born here, Frank Lloyd Wright called it home, Mies Van Der Rohe pretty much defined "less is more" here), beaches in the summer, snow for sledding in the winter, one of the most bike-friendly cities of its size in America, a major transportation hub (direct flights from Chicago to London, etc.)...
Does it have its problems? Sure. It's a city with millions of people. But live here for a while then do some travelling ... you will learn to appreciate what Chicago has

Deoends on what you are looking for.
LA tends to be all about glitz and glammor. NYC is the same way and way too cocky as well. Everyone wants to be in the limelight and will do anything to get there.
Chicago is a bit more balanced. Yeah it has the wannabe celebrities but it also has everyday working class people who don't want to be celebrities at all.
If your looking for a city that has some of everything than I would say Chicago.
And if you want proof of the cocky attitude of NYC I noticed that you said is Chicago "ONE" of the best cities? Which would say to me that you are talking about a number of cities being cool but two people have already made claims to NYC being the best and #1 when you clearly wheren't looking for that.

Almost anyone will say that their city is the best, but yes, Chicago is quintessentially American--in both good and bad ways.
