original unreal tournament wont play online?

at school i can use multiplaer against my friends because of the lan, but i cant go online at home.i have cable and when i try to connect(note this is demo)it says querying server.what does that mean and what can i do to play online.people say that there are otheres playing online.

most demos dont allow online play so check on that and also check if its updated to the latest online version
