You are talking about a superstition that exists in many countries in the world and also here where I live. People here believe that is baby is born in the 7th month of pregnancy, it will live and if it is born in the 8th month of pregnancy, it will die. I don't know where that belief came from but here they even count days and you can hear a mother say: "My baby was born on the first day of the 9th month that's why s/he lived". To me that doesn't make sense first because how do you know exactly it was the first day of the 9th month when generally mothers don't know the exact day of conception. And then, I never read about any examples of that in a pregnancy book - on the contrary, the older the baby, the bigger the chance that it will live. Now doctors follow pregnancy in weeks and there is an accepted age of 28 weeks (I think) after which if the baby is born, it has a much bigger chance of surviving. It all comes to milestones in the baby's development like when the lungs will be mature enough for the baby to breathe by itself. Then if baby is premature, it depends on many factors if it will survive or not. First of all, why it came early - did the mother have a problem or the baby? Now that medicine has developed so much and there is such good neonatal equipment and good specialists, premature baby's chance to survive are much bigger than they were before.
