I had this happen, and it was the final straw - I switched to Ubuntu (easy to use Linux). http://ubuntu.com/

I don't know if you're ready for that step yet, so let me see if I can find a way to solve your problem.

1.) Clear out your cache.
This means emptying Internet Explorer's temporary file memory.
Tools... > Internet Options > ?
It's somewhere in there, I haven't used IE in years (It's too slow). I use Firefox, if you're curious - http://getfirefox.com/

2.) How full is your hard drive?
If it's over 1/2 full, it'll slow down a bit, over 3/4 full it'll slow down a lot.
Go through your My Documents and get rid of files you don't need and don't want.
Uninstall programs you don't use (Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs)
Backup files you want to keep (but don't need on the computer) onto CD / DVD, then delete them.
Download, install and run Ccleaner - it finds a lot of the files that programs leave behind and can clear them out for you! - http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
After all of this, go into Start > My Computer > right-click on your main hard drive > Properties > Tools (tab) > Defragment.

If it's still crashing after all of this, you may have spyware / a virus:
Download and install these two programs:
Anti-virus - AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
Anti-spyware - Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html
Update them, then run them. Remove whatever they find.

There may be someone trying to mess with you / your connection - that may be what's causing the freezing.
Install a firewall:
Firewall - Zonealarm - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
Back when I had Windows, this stopped over a thousand access attempts in a week.

If you're using XP like I imagine you are, XP has a habit of melting down after a year or so; especially with heavy use. If all of the above didn't help you may need to wipe your hard drive and reinstall Windows.
