Abibe Bekale, who was one of the palace guards of the then King of Ethopia ( Emperor Haiel Salesi) ran the Olympics Marathon barefooted and not only that he got the Gold medal ( Rome 1960) he repeated the feat by winning the Marathon ( only man to win back to back Marathons in the Olympics ) in Tokyo 1964.

I think you are talking about Abebe Bikila, former Imperial Guard for his highness Haile Selassie, King Of Ethiopia, who ran the Marathon in the 1960 Olympics completely barefooted.
From Wikipedia.org:
"Bikila became a national hero after winning the Olympic gold medal, in the marathon at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, setting a world record of 2 h 15 min 16.2 s. In addition to winning the gold, Bikila became famous for running it barefoot. He was trained by the Finnish military trainer Niskinen, who selected him from candidates in Haile Selassie's army, after biometric tests performed in Stockholm. During the marathon, Bikila passed the Obelisk of Axum, which had been looted from Ethiopia after the Second Italo-Abyssinian War.
At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Bikila was in a weakened condition. He had had his appendix removed six weeks before the race, which forced him to curtail his training regimen for the marathon. Nevertheless, Bikila - this time wearing running shoes - repeated his prior Olympic win, setting a new world record of 2 h 12 min 11.2 s. He impressed the Olympics Stadium crowd by performing jumping jacks and other exercises immediately after his victory while other runners crossed the finish line and collapsed."

Summer Olympics Legends introduces readers to five athletes who are remembered for their remarkable achievements during past Summer Olympics.
Readers will learn about a young man from Ethiopia named Abebe Bikila who ran shoeless in a 26-mile marathon,
decathlete Daley Thompson who won not one, but two, decathlons, and
Fanny Blankers-Koen, a mother of two children who had to wait until World War II ended to compete in her second Olympics.
They will also read about gymnast Nadia Comaneci who scored the first perfect "10," and swimmer Mark Spitz, who holds the record for the number of gold medals won in a single Olympics.

Ancient Olympians all ran without shoes.
US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos made history when they took the Olympic medal stage in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1968 and raised their gloved fists in the Black Power salute. They also wore no shoes to protest black poverty.
