It is a place where you can go to escape, but when you get there you can never leave. It is a Pandora's box. Open the box and you will see all that is gold.

Music is quite often a memory which is individual to each person. It can trigger a date, a location, a time, and the metaphor which the lyrics try to convey is quite often unimportant compared to the memory music can trigger to an individual.

I would say therefore that the true meaning is infinite. For each individual it will hold a different memory, and for each new listener it will start a new memory. The meaning of all music, is not within the lyrics but within the total feel of the song.

For sure there was a trigger to write the song, but that trigger is personal only to the writer.

It's widely reported that the band says it's about an asylum in California said to be haunted by the former patients.

Did you know that song has the most incorrectly interpreted line in rock? It says, "One smell of colitas rising up through the air." Colitas being Spanish slang for marijuana.

Beautiful song. One of my favorites.

It's not about an hotel, and there is no story. It portrays or represents the writers feelings toward the Californian mentality, politics, social structure and the falseness of it all. Well, that's what Joe Walsh told me.

Hotel California touched on many themes, including innocence (and the loss thereof), addiction to drugs, death, the dangers, temptations, and transient nature of fame, shallow relationships, divorce and loss of love, the end results of manifest destiny, and the "American Dream".

Hotel California is an undying song...the tune is very nice, the accompaninment is superb... and the lyrics is fine...maybe the song is intended for some kind of hotel advertisement :)......in the literral sense....but for my figurative outlook...its portrays about desire...the material world...people craving for earthly pleasure , some thru the sparkles of wine and the taste of flesh ...and such desire could not be killed...its a global attitude...and its getting worse..

I thought it was a song about a bordello. Maybe I'm confusing that with the House of the Rising Sun. Is it important?

Spirits in an old hotel. Also can be mean when you are trapped in a big problem and can't come out from it easily.
