This started happenning about 3 weeks ago and was not gradual. I just woke up one morning and had stiff painfull fingers and this has persisted since then. I am not taking any medication now nor have been in the past. The suddeness of it is what alarms me. I am 56 and in good health otherwise.

Sounds like Osteoarthritis. It can come on suddenly or take years to develop. Here is a site with more info for you:

Sounds like the onset of arthritis. I have similar conditions in my own hands. Check with your doctor to be sure though; it could be carpal tunnel syndrome. The suddeness of it is intriguing.

You may be sleeping on them. Also this could be a sign of carperal tunnel syndrome or arthritis. I get this sometimes too and I had carperal tunnel really bad when I was pregnant.
