I want to put in a water softener , there is no drain nearby, i can run a pipe to the main garden water drain, is this OK?

the drain takes away the water that is used in the recharghing process, it usually goes into your main sewer drain, so i am asking if it is OK for it to simply drain into my garden drain that eventually drains at the curb and washes down hill to the main runoff

Check your local codes. Drains from a water softener contain high levels of salt, which is corrosive.

i think that most softeners have a gravity drain. check your owners manual or the manufacturer's web site

Yes. In fact, it is probably the best bet; running hard water into the garden doesn't impress me as being good for the plants.
