why does determining the mass of something as small as the atom isn't easy?

because we dont have a scale with measure as small as an atoms mass is to enable us to measure it. and its too tiny for us to be able to carry it.

It isn't easy because you can't dissect an atom. It is the smallest unit in the body.

Atoms are pretty meaningless if you go string theory..
