So my friend and I are debating about it right now. It's kind of dumb, but does anybody know if Cingular bought AT&T or did AT&T buy Cingular?

Cingular bought AT&T

Both:

A few years ago AT&T sold off its wireless unit to Cingular. At that time Cingular was co-owned by SBC and Bell South. Since then SBC bought out AT&T and took the AT&T name.

One year ago AT&T bought out Bell South. As part of that deal, AT&T took over the Bell South portion of the Cingular partnership. In addition, AT&T decided to rebrand Cingular into AT&T Wireless.

Once again, the answer is Both: Cingular buys AT&T Wireless. AT&T (formerly SBC) buys out Bell South's share of Cingular, rebrands it AT&T.

i work at cingular and along time ago cingular bought enough shares of att to "buy them out" now cingular is changing its name to the new att because it is a more widley known name everybody everywhere has heard of att so it is more trustworthy. The service never changed, for the worst becasue they did not get rid of atts network they merged it with cingulars so it only got better.

So to answer your question these commercials you see on tv is solely a logo change

Cingular bought out AT&T. And since they have, their service has definitely suffered. Since Cingular no longer is able to give the same service that we used to have with AT&T, I usually recommend against it.

Cingular bought AT&T but is chaning its name to AT&T for some weird unknown reason. I think they should have kept it Cingular.

Cingular bought ATT WIRELESS (not att), but then bellsouth and ATT merged allowing the combined shares of att and bellsouth to come together, giving them controlling interest over Cingular.
