and don't say heat, oxygen, and fuel. this part i know. I'm asking about the fuel. what makes it a fuel? wood is fuel, gas can be fuel. water is not fuel. coal is fuel yet diamonds are not, and both are carbon. hmm

If a compound can be easily oxidized, then it can burn. That's why metals, sugars, lipids, etc. all burn; they are being oxidized very rapidly and giving off tons of energy.

and btw, coal is not carbon- coal is made from a variety of carbon-containing compounds, but is not pure carbon. Graphite is pure carbon

first of all the fuel when burned needs to be exothermic. and it must realease a large amount of energy considering the moles of reactant.
